The collection contains Davis' Civil War journals in three bound volumes, and related materials removed from the journals. These include a typescript copy of an official account of Davis' action at Port Republic, and a photocopy of an article from the CIVIL WAR TIMES based on the November 1862 journal. There is also a copy of Richard S. Skidmore's THE CIVIL WAR JOURNAL OF BILLY DAVIS.

Billy (William) Davis, a native of Hopewell, Johnson County, Ind., served during the Civil War with the 7th Indiana Volunteer Infantry. He fought at Kernstown, Port Republic, Second Bull Run, Fredericksburg, Chancellorsville, and Gettysburg. In 1913 Davis began writing a journal of his war experiences based on his diary and the letters of other soldiers. He completed the journal only through May, 1863, before his death.
